This is what hotels in Avoriaz are all about
This hotel is a ski-in, ski-out stay packed with mountain charm, from the weathered, timber shingles on the outside to the stylish bedrooms, with their fluffy throws and ski-inspired artwork wall art.
In the centre of the 650km Portes du Soleil area, Avoriaz is a dream for intermediates. Click into your skis at the door of your accommodation, then set off to explore the huge network of high-altitude blues and reds. And you can stretch your legs even further by skiing over the border into Switzerland. The resort’s also got you covered if you’re new the mountain – start off in the nursery area right next to the town and then move onto the linked greens and blues down towards Morzine.
Avoriaz itself is a pretty unique place. It’s full of tall buildings with slanted roofs and walls covered in wooden shingles, which are meant to mirror the natural shape of the surrounding mountains. There’s loads of self-catering accommodation here, which makes it a favourite with families and groups. And the streets are car-free and snowy, so you can ski right through the town – or hop in a sleigh instead.
This also happens to be one of the best resorts in France for off-slopes activities. You can play in a tropical jungle full of waterfalls and slides at the Aquariaz water park. Or if you’d rather be out exploring the area, strap on some snowshoes and join a walking tour, which is capped off with dinner in a mountain hut.
